Restorations and Maintenance

Our Restoration and Maintenance Projects

At Sir Black Piano Services Limited, we’re dedicated to helping you get the most out of your piano through expert tuning, regulation, action repairs, restorations, and more.

Restoration

Overtime, or due to poor storage, a piano’s exterior can become severely damaged, requiring more extensive work than general repairs. It can include refinishing the exterior, replacing worn-out, broken or termite infested parts, and addressing any structural issues.  Restoration can help return older or antique pianos to optimal playing condition and preserve their value.

A piano lost to the elements is not lost to you.  Let us restore your family inheritance, your prized possession and “reunite” you with your piano.

Maintenance

Your piano is a relatively delicate instrument requiring regular care and upkeep to ensure it remains in good condition and produces high-quality sound. Contrary to popular belief, maintenance involves more than just tuning.  While tuning is an ongoing maintenance activity, it is usually performed after several other activities such as cleaning, action repairs, regulation, voicing, etc.

Tuning

Piano strings go out of tune, that is, they can stretch or lose tension due to several factors including, temperature and humidity changes, wear and tear from frequent playing, or naturally over time. Even moving or shifting the piano can affect the alignment and tension of the strings.

Tuning involves adjusting the tension of the strings to ensure they produce the correct pitch. Ideally, pianos should be tuned 3 times a year. However, the general standard is once every 6 months or at least once a year, in some special cases.

So what happens if a string breaks or the component that hits the strings (the hammers) are worn out or some other damage has occurred to the piano? Your technician will generally sort all that out before he tunes your piano.

Action Repairs

An integral part of the piano is the action. It is the internal complex mechanism that connects the keys to the hammers and strings. Repairs include fixing or replacing broken or missing parts in the piano’s action. To ensure good playability, your action needs to be in good working order.

Action Repairs

General Repairs

The action is not the only part of the piano that might require repairs. Other repairs include fixing sticking or uneven keys, replacing broken strings, and addressing humidity or general wear and tear issues.

Regulation

Regulation involves making precise adjustments to the action mechanism to ensure the piano performs optimally and responds consistently to the player’s touch. It also addresses issues like uneven key height, inconsistent hammer distance, and irregular key resistance.

Your piano is an investment, whether financial or emotional, and is worth the professional care we can provide. Trust us to assess and service your piano.
